Chapter 19

That damn girl, she was being shielded by those interfering vampires, and despite turning over every stone; he could not find where they were keeping her. He only certainty was that she not with their leader. Since the birth of that baby his lair was more elusive than ever, now he only used the teleportation to bring the rare guest in or out. And his wife was constantly guarded, even when she returned to Pack Land there was no way to get to her. After the lovely Ellie had escaped, he had maintained a distance from the wolves. He had no doubt that they were heavily protected now and he had no intention of risking his identity.

The wolves would be useless; he didn’t expect any of them to know her location. His numerous tracking spells had also proved to be a waste of time. Slamming his fist into the wall he grimaced as pain spread through his hand radiating into his arm. His kind was not blessed with the ability to manage pain, something that infuriated him. He hated being the weaker species.

Lyra was his daughter, his, and no-one else’s. He brought her into this world, and he would decide her fate, not the vampires or anyone else. Her life was his; the life and death of each of his children was his to decide.

The shrill ring of his cell grated on his nerves that were becoming more fragile with each passing day that she remained lost to him. At the sight of his son’s name he winced, what did the pansy want this time? He had given him one task; find the history of his enemies, not that his son knew they were his enemies. And so far, he had given him nothing. A small town in Ireland was the only information his son had retrieved, which after extensive and expensive investigation had told him that Shaun had been born there. He had no surviving family members save for one, and she was being watched. When the time was right, she would be useful. Until then she was nothing more than a pawn waiting to be used.

“Son, surprise me.” He didn’t try to keep the boredom out of his tone. He was his youngest child at fourteen, and his most mundane child. When his only son had been born, he had expected extraordinary things from him. In return he got nothing, a kid interested in history and even that interest had given him nothing. The kid couldn’t even perform the smallest of spells without catastrophe following in his wake.

“Uh, well I think, I may…..” For a fleeting moment he enjoyed the nervous tremor in his sons’s voice, like mother like son. Then the irritation kicked in, he always irritated him with his many weaknesses.

“Spit it out for god’s sake.” He imagined him hunched over his laptop, with his orange hair falling in front of his acne-ridden face. He would be biting the side of his mouth, something he did when anxious.
